I have known Harkan for a very long time. In fact, he was one of the first-starters back when no-one knew what BJJ was, I had just returned from brazil, and began teaching (as a purple belt) in Kensington (Melbourne).
Harkan has always been one of the most solid and dependable students on the mat. His dedication to training, even through some periods of serious injury, has been exceptional. Harkan now teaches classes at Fusion MMA in Melbourne, and I can only hope the students there realize how very fortunate they are in having such an experienced and thoughtful instructor looking after them.
Well done Harkan – your new rank is fully deserved – may you wear it well.
Best wishes always
JBW

The 2009 ADCC World No Gi Submission Grappling Championships were held on September 26 and 27 in Barcelona, Spain. Australia sent a team of 5 competitors who qualified for the World Championships by winning the Australasian trials in March of this year. The 5 team members included David Marinakis (Under 66kg), Rodney Ellis (Under 77kg), Igor Praporshchikov (Under 88kg), Anthony Perosh (Under 99kg) and Denis Roberts (Over 99kg).
Three out of the 5 members of the Australian team came from Will-Machado Australia including David Marinakis from Dominance Mixed Martial Arts and Anthony Perosh and Denis Roberts from Sinosic Perosh Martial Arts.
All 5 members of the Australian team had tough opening matches all facing former and defending world champions! In the under 66kg division David Marinakis fought a tough 8 minutes before getting caught in a guillotine choke by multiple world champion Leo Veira. In the under 77kg division Rodney Ellis had the worst luck of the draw facing 3 time defending champion Marcelo Garcia and losing by guillotine choke. In the under 88kg division Igor Praporshchikov fought a 20 minute double overtime war against World Champion Tarsis Humphries and lost a decision. In the under 99kg division Anthony Perosh faced multiple world champion Marcio “Pe De Pano” Cruz. Anthony had Pe De Pano’s back in the match but couldn’t capitalise and lost 3 points to 0 after having his guard passed in the last 30 seconds. In the over 99kg Denis Roberts lost by heelhook to World Champion Romulo Barral.
A big congratulations to the entire Australian team.
