Black Belt profile: Vincent Perry

BJJ Black Belt Vince Perry

Vince began in the martial arts in 1980, training from 1984 to 1993 with Walt Missingham. During this time Vincent won state and national titles in full contact Kung-fu and in 1989 took out first place in the Sikaran Arnis International Black Belt Championship – a no gloved, no weight division knockout competition that allowed the use of punches, kicks, knees, elbows, and takedowns.

“PUMMA (at that time Cadence) established Queensland’s first BJJ academy in 1995. As a student of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since the early 1990’s, I cannot state highly enough the respect that I have for it as a fighting art and the enjoyment I derive from participating in it. The basics (enough to beat many people) can be gleaned in less than six months on the mat, yet a lifetime may be required in order to master it.”

Professionally, Vincent worked security/crowd control for many years in night clubs in Sydney’s western suburbs. As a double certificate registered nurse he was employed both in Australia and overseas in areas such as forensic psychiatry. In 1987 Vincent received a N.S.W State Nursing Excellence Award as recognition for his work with disabled children.

In 1999 Vincent completed an Information Technology degree experiencing first hand the demands of adult education. He has recently upgraded his martial arts coaching qualifications through the International College of KENSHUSEI

Vincent received his Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from John Will at the Will / Machado Nationals in September 2007
